On 23 April 2005, he received an Honorary Doctorate (DSc honoris causa) from the University of Pretoria.

On 27 May 2005, The National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) Awards 2004 were presented at a Gala Dinner at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park.

Prof Marasas was one of the 8 finalists in Category A (research over a lifetime), which was won by Prof George Ellis of UCT. Prof Marasas has also been elected as an APS fellow.

The award will be presented to him at the Annual Meeting of the American Phytopathological Society (APS), Austin, Texas, USA, 30 July - 3 August 2005.

The title of his presentation at this meeting is: Mango malformation disease and the associated Fusarium species.
